The Story Behind
The Clocktower Kitchen + Bar

The Clocktower was born from a shared passion for community, cuisine, and craft by co-founders Benjamyn Greig and Shane Whitacre. With a combined background in hospitality leadership and event operations, they’ve created a space that blends thoughtful design with a deep respect for local food culture. We’re bringing a refined approach to American classics, focusing on seasonal, farm-sourced ingredients. Together with a dedicated front-of-house team and a commitment to warm, genuine service, The Clocktower offers a dining experience that feels both elevated and familiar.

Clocktower History

There are not many others like Plain City’s Clocktower. Rather than being electrified with motor-driven arrangements, it is a complex gravity-based clock build by the famous Seth Thomas Clock Company, the same company that built the clock in Philadelphia at Independence Hall. The clock was constructed in September of 1902 and installed in November of 1902 for $525. Since its dedication, the clock has been removed for repairs twice, in 1989 and 2015.

Uncle Sammy (1817-1904)

Samuel Taylor, known as Uncle Sammy, was the son of Richard Taylor, a prominent pioneer and one of the earliest settlers in the area. As Samuel grew older, his nickname, "Uncle Sammy," reflected the deep respect and admiration his neighbors, friends, and family had for him.

The Need for a Town Clock

Isaac Bigelow owned the “Traveler’s Rest” log cabin inn. It later became the Worthington, Bond and National Hotel, where there was a ritual of ringing a bell to summon guests to meals. The bell became a way for the citizens and neighbors to tell time before many owned watches or clocks.

When Samuel considered a gift for the town, he realized that the bell would no longer be around once the hotel was eventually demolished. Thus, he decided to donate a town clock—the clock tower quickly became more than just a timekeeping device. It represented the town’s growth and the collaborative spirit of its people.
